Bill Gagnon
Bill Gagnon is a recognized leader at the intersection of music, technology, and content with over two decades of global executive experience at EMI Music and Universal Music Group. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern digital music business and maximizing the long-term value of iconic music catalogues and rights.
At UMG (2012–2024), Bill served as SVP, Business Development & Digital Strategy, leading digital innovation programs, licensing music to emerging formats, and shaping AI policy. Previously, as SVP, Catalog Development (2013–2017), he implemented digital optimization initiatives to improve DSP store profiles for catalogue artists, unlocking significant new revenue streams. Bill also expanded UMG’s catalog assets by overseeing initiatives such as licensing Frank Sinatra’s Reprise Records, acquiring Eagle Rock Entertainment, and doubling UMG’s long-form video library through strategic investments in archival content and streamlining rights.
During his tenure at EMI Music (1995–2013), Bill was General Manager of the Catalogue Division (2006-2013), the company’s largest and most profitable unit. He oversaw all operations and guided the business through the industry’s digital transformation period. Bill pioneered innovative catalogue marketing techniques and under his leadership, the catalogue division released 18 projects that were certified Platinum and Gold, won three Grammy Awards, and led historic campaigns including The Beatles’ 2009 Remasters and Pink Floyd’s 2011 catalog rollout.
Bill holds an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of California and currently advises on music rights acquisitions, rights management, and music tech ventures focused on rights monetization.
